OUR SPECIALIST

Meet Dr. Michael J. Franquemont

Dr. Michael J. Franquemont ("Dr. Mike" to his patients) received his undergraduate degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Arizona. He then attended the University of Colorado School of Dentistry, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1999.

For over 20 years, Dr. Franquemont has been practicing high-quality general dentistry to patients of all ages. He enjoys getting to know his patients, hearing about their adventures, solving their dental problems, and creating beautiful smiles. He stays current with the latest advances in dentistry and invests in new technology when it benefits his patients. Dr. Franquemont's experience with TMJ pain as a teen drove him to study various treatment methods that he now uses to help patients find lasting relief.

"I chose dentistry because I had very painful TMJ problems as a teenager and was helped greatly by my childhood dentist. The relief I experienced motivated me to help others solve their dental problems. Now, I stay with dentistry because I enjoy spending time with my patients."

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a dental crown?

At Michael Franquemont DDS, we can complete an all-porcelain crown or bridge in less than two hours.

What are CEREC Dental Crowns?

CEREC is the acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, a fancy way of saying that we design and fabricate high-quality crowns and bridges without using an outside dental lab. For over 15 years, Dr. Franquemont has been using CAD/CAM technology to create durable restorations that blend beautifully with your smile.

The CEREC Dental Crown Process

The first step in getting a CEREC crown or bridge is similar to a lab-fabricated restoration, in which our dentist reshapes the tooth to receive the new crown. The similarity ends there because instead of messy impressions, we use CAD/CAM technology to scan your teeth to create a digital impression.

Dr. Franquemont uses the digital impression to create a virtual model of your tooth, then uses the software to design your new crown. He then sends the file to a CEREC milling machine in our office that works like a 3-D printer to fabricate your crown from a block of porcelain shaded to match.

With CEREC same-visit crowns, we eliminate the need for messy impressions, multiple office visits, a 2-3 week wait, and temporary crowns. You will leave our office the same day with your beautiful new customized dental restoration securely in place. Another advantage of CEREC crowns is that if you need a root canal and a crown, our Centennial dentist can generally complete both procedures on the same day.

My dental crown popped off while flossing. What should I do?

We understand that losing a dental crown can be upsetting. It’s crucial to handle the situation promptly to avoid further damage to the tooth.

First, find and save the crown. Rinse it gently with water and keep it in a safe place. Avoid using the affected tooth to chew, and contact Dr. Michael J. Franquemont, DDS, in Centennial, CO, as soon as possible to schedule an emergency dental appointment.

Why a Dental Crown Might Fall Off

There are different reasons why a dental crown could come off. These include decay beneath the crown, insufficient cement, or the natural deterioration of the dental adhesive. In some cases, the crown's fit may be compromised, or changes to the underlying tooth structure could cause the crown to become loose.

What to Expect at Your Emergency Visit

Dr. Franquemont will examine the tooth and crown during your emergency visit to determine the cause. If the crown and tooth are both in good condition, we may be able to re-cement it. However, if the tooth is decayed or the crown is damaged, getting a new one might be the best option to protect your dental health and ensure stability.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening is a popular and effective cosmetic dentistry procedure that reduces staining on the surfaces of teeth. Teeth whitening can be performed at home using over-the-counter solutions or professionally at a dentist’s office. The longevity of teeth whitening results typically depends on which of these options – and which specific treatment within each category – you choose.

Professional treatments, which use chemical or light-activated whitening agents (typically with hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient) tend to be more effective and longer lasting than at-home options, with results often lasting up to a year or more.

Over-the-counter “DIY” whitening solutions can also offer good results but tend to last only about a month or less. These options – toothpastes, strips, or gels – are typically available at supermarkets or pharmacies.

Falling in between are take-home professional kits (which you can get from your dentist), whose results usually last several months, but less than in-office treatments.

How to maximize your teeth whitening results?

Several factors affect how long teeth whitening results last. The longevity of whitening results depends largely on the whitening method used. However, to keep your whites pearly for as long as possible, adhere to a strong oral hygiene routine and limit your consumption of tooth-staining foods (beets, red berries)  and beverages (coffee, tea, red wine).

Are dental implants painful?

The prospect of dental implants can raise questions about pain and discomfort. However, understanding the reality behind the process will help alleviate concerns. Advancements in dental implant techniques, including precise planning and minimally invasive procedures, have significantly reduced post-procedure discomfort.

Dental implant placement is typically performed under local anesthesia, ensuring the procedure itself is virtually painless. Patients might experience some mild discomfort during recovery. This is a routine, natural body response to any surgical procedure. This discomfort is generally manageable with over-the-counter pain medications as prescribed by your dentist. Most patients report that any initial discomfort is easily tolerable, and pain diminishes rapidly.

Remember, it's essential to communicate openly with the dental team. This allows them to address your concerns as they arise and tailor pain management strategies to your needs.

In short, dental implants are an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth. Any temporary discomfort is usually more than offset by the long-term benefits of a restored, natural-feeling, fully functional smile and bite.

Can I get a dental implant if I have gum disease?

It depends. If your gum disease is managed and your oral health is stable, you may be eligible for a dental implant. However, active gum disease must be treated before implant placement.

Why Gum Disease and Implants Don’t Mix

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a condition that affects the gums and supporting structures of your teeth. This can lead to bone loss and compromise your oral health. It's important to note that dental implants require healthy gums and a stable foundation of dense bone to be successful. Therefore, it's crucial to treat and stabilize gum disease as a necessary first step before considering dental implants.

A Personalized Gum Disease Treatment Plan

Your dental implant dentist in Centennial will conduct a thorough evaluation to assess the severity of your gum disease. From there, they will develop a personalized gum disease treatment plan to address it, which may involve deep cleanings, scaling and root planing, and possibly surgery to restore gum health. Once your gum disease is under control and your oral health is stabilized, we can proceed with the dental implant process.

How much does dentistry cost in Greenwood Village?

The price of dentistry varies for several reasons, including the reason for your dental visit, the complexity of your treatment, and the type or level of insurance coverage you have.

A member of our team can work with your insurance company to create pretreatment estimates, and we always help patients make the most of their yearly benefits.

At Michael J. Franquemont, we offer periodic specials to help with costs and accept third-party financing through CareCredit. Specials sometimes include discounts on new patient exams and free smile makeover consultations. In addition, some CareCredit programs allow you to finance dentistry over time without interest.

We also focus on prevention, which saves you money on preventable treatments. Prevention includes:

  1. Regular checkups to catch emerging problems before they turn into costly complications

  2. Regular teeth cleanings to rid your teeth of the plaque and bacteria that lead to cavities and gum disease.

Your dentist in Greenwood Village can also provide guidance on best practices for maintaining a healthy smile, including nutritional advice.

How often do you need dental cleanings?

For most patients, a routine dental check-up every six months is recommended.

The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist twice a year for preventive dentistry and teeth cleanings. However, some patients need to visit their dentist more often, depending on their overall oral health, lifestyle choices, and genetics.

We Offer Personalized Dental Care

While the average person only needs six-month dental cleanings, patients who are more prone to cavities or those living with gum disease will benefit from having three, four, or even more dental cleanings per year. Your Centennial dentist can help you determine the level of care that’s appropriate for you.

In addition to your semi-annual teeth cleanings, you will also need periodic dental x-rays taken. Typically, we take new bitewing x-rays that show your teeth above the gum line about once per year, or at every other visit.

Dr. Mike will also perform a brief dental exam every time you come in for a visit. This exam's point is to check for dental “red flags” such as loose teeth, painful gums, and obvious gum disease.
